Summer camp has many benefits for our youth, from making friends, enjoying the outdoors, to unplugging from technology. But for parents, it can be a nerve-wracking experience. Will my child be safe? Will they have fun? What should I pack?
Here are a few tips to help put your mind at ease and ensure that your child has a great time at summer camp.
Do: Choose the Right Camp
There are so many different types of camps out there, from sports camps to arts camps to tech camps. It’s important to do your research and find a camp that aligns with your child’s interests. That way, they’re more likely to have fun and make friends who share their interests.
Don’t: Send Too Much Technology
It’s important for kids to unplug from technology and enjoy the outdoors. Most camps have a no-phone policy, so sending your child with a tablet or laptop is probably not necessary. If you do send any electronics with your child, make sure they are well-protected in a durable case.
Do: Pack Smart
Most camps will provide you with a packing list, but it’s always good to double-check. In addition to the essentials like clothing and toiletries, be sure to pack any medications your child takes on a regular basis. And if your child has any allergies, be sure to inform the camp staff in advance.
If you’re unsure what to pack, err on the side of caution and pack too much rather than too little. Your child can always leave extra clothes at home if they don’t end up needing them.
Don’t: Forget About Insurance
Accidents happen, even at camp. Be sure to check if your health insurance plan covers injuries that occur while away from home. If it doesn’t, you may want to purchase temporary insurance for your child while they are at camp.
Summer camp is a great way for kids to make friends and enjoy the outdoors—but it can also be nerve-wracking for parents. With these tips in mind, you can rest assured that your child will have a great time at summer camp while staying safe and healthy.
